Citation Rankings

A guide to citation ranking and the citation ranking databases in use in the Argonne Research Library

InCites Homepage

From the InCites homepage, click Start an analysis.

From this screen, you can choose the type of entity you want to analyze from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. For the purpose of this example, we will click Organizations, then click the Start button.

InCites now shows a table listing all research organizations that have published cited documents in the last 5 complete years, in this case, from 2019 to 2023. The default listing order is by number of times cited. Almost every feature of this table can be customized, depending on the metrics that you are interested in.

If, for example, you wanted to investigate Argonne's citation metrics in the field of Chemistry, you would start by clicking Organization Name in the Filters Menu on the left side of the screen.

A search field will appear. Type the name of the organization you want to investigate. In this case, Argonne National Laboratory. Then click Update results.

The results table now shows only Argonne's information. Notice also that every time you add a filter to the query, it appears as a green box at the top of the screen.

To narrow the query results by academic subject, scroll down to the bottom of the Filters menu and click Research Area

Typing Chemistry into the search field will auto-generate a list of subcategories within the field of Chemistry. Since I am interested in Argonne's total Chemistry publication output, I will click on all of them, then click Update Results.

InCites now shows only the metrics for papers published by Argonne in Chemistry and it's various sub-disciplines.

If you wanted to compare Argonne's publication metrics with another organization, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for example, you would again click on Organization Name in the Filters menu on the left side of the screen. Type the name of the second organization, and click Update Results. The table now shows chemistry publication data for both Argonne and Oak Ridge. You can add as many additional organizations to the table as you like.

InCites also allows you to add, delete, and rearrange the column headers. To do so, click Add Indicator. A dropdown menu will appear listing the 76 indicators that InCites currently tracks.

If, for example, you wanted to see how many of the citations came from patents, you would scroll down the indicators dropdown list until you found Citations from Patents. Click the check box, then click Apply.

A Citations From Patents column is added to the end of the table. You can add as many of the indicators to the table as you like. You can also rearrange the order of the columns by clicking the column header and dragging it to a different position.

Clicking Visual will display the current data as cart or graph.

A Trend Graph of Times Cited is displayed. You can, however, change the subject of the visual, and the type of visualization by clicking on the Choose a different visualization and Times Cited dropdowns in the upper left corner of the graph.

Finally, clicking Download will allow you to convert the data into an Excel document and save it to your computer. Checking the Trend Data box will cause the information to be broken out by year.
